Introduction
The Independent Prescribing (IP) course represents a crucial advancement for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their careers. As a leading organization in the field, MEDLRN provides essential support to IP students. Our expertise offers valuable insights into the intricate application process and highlights key considerations for prospective students. This guidance is designed to help healthcare professionals navigate the complexities of pursuing an IP qualification effectively.

Course Availability and Funding
The IP course caters to a diverse range of healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, nurses, and paramedics. For pharmacists specifically, 52 universities currently offer this course, with details available on the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) website. Nurses and paramedics can easily find course availability information through online searches.
Funding is a significant factor for many prospective students. Notably, Health Education England (HEE) has extended its funding support until March 2025, covering upcoming course cohorts. This extension presents a valuable opportunity for eligible candidates. To assist students in identifying funded options, MEDLRN maintains a comprehensive list of universities offering HEE-funded courses, complementing the information available on the HEE website.
Application Process and Requirements
We strongly emphasize the importance of allocating sufficient time for the IP course application process. This process can be time-consuming, involving extensive form-filling and the critical task of securing a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP). It’s important to note that all universities mandate having a DPP in place before application submission. MEDLRN offers valuable assistance in navigating this requirement, helping to streamline the process for applicants.
While standard requirements across universities include being a qualified healthcare professional and completing 90 hours of learning and practice, there are notable variations between institutions. For example, the required DPP shadowing hours can range from 25 to 70, depending on the university. Additionally, some institutions offer remote in-practice learning options, while others insist on face-to-face interactions. MEDLRN’s expertise becomes particularly valuable here, as we can provide detailed guidance on these varying requirements, helping applicants choose the most suitable program for their circumstances.
Challenges and Support
The IP qualification process presents several challenges, primarily due to its intensive nature and the substantial independent study required. This can be particularly daunting for community pharmacists transitioning to a clinical setting. Recognizing these challenges, MEDLRN has developed a comprehensive support system. We offer additional training and resources specifically designed to ease this transition, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the rigorous academic and practical demands of the course.

Timeline and Course Structure
Based on our experience, we recommend allocating at least three weeks for the application process, starting from university selection to application submission. This timeline accounts for several crucial steps: reserving a DPP slot through MEDLRN, completing our thorough application process, and gathering all necessary information from the assigned DPP.
For those seeking flexibility, remote learning options are available at select institutions. Universities such as the University of West England (UWE), Bath University, and Robert Gordon University offer fully remote programs. Other institutions provide hybrid models, blending online learning with minimal face-to-face requirements. MEDLRN’s advisory services can help applicants determine which of these options best aligns with their personal circumstances and learning preferences.
Typically, IP courses commence in January, March, or September, varying by university. The standard course duration is six months, but some universities offer alternative timelines. These include accelerated four-month programs for those seeking a more intensive experience, and extended 12-month options for students needing additional flexibility.
Ethical Considerations and DPP Payment
MEDLRN takes a proactive approach to address concerns regarding DPP payments. By positioning ourselves as an independent intermediary, we effectively mitigate potential conflicts of interest and uphold ethical standards. Our organization implements a standardized pricing system, ensuring fairness and transparency. Importantly, DPPs receive payment regardless of whether students are ultimately signed off as competent, reinforcing the integrity of the assessment process.
Conclusion
While university programs excel in imparting clinical skills, MEDLRN complements this by offering crucial support in practical and system-related skills essential for clinical settings. This comprehensive approach ensures that students receive a well-rounded learning experience throughout their IP qualification journey. For healthcare professionals contemplating the IP course, MEDLRN stands as a dedicated partner, ready to provide support and guidance at every stage of the process, from initial consideration to final qualification.
Hi Faheem ,
I’ve just watched your you tube videos on becoming an IP. Very informative , however In your opinion what type of scope of practice would be suitable for community pharmacy now that we are already using PGD’s and giving out medications for UTI , otitis media and sore throat. It seems pointless to have these as scopes of practice if we are already involved without being an IP. I wish to remain in community pharmacy and agree with you that there will be many opportunities.
